Protect yourself from bank account scams by calling a simple 3-digit number

In the first quarter of the 2024 financial year (1 April – 30 June 2024), the FCA reported that consumers lodged 8,734 complaints about fraud and scams, of which over half were in relation to customer-approved online bank transfers, also known as authorised push payment (APP) scams. [1]
With scam calls on the rise from individuals pretending to be your bank, you may be unsure if it’s your bank calling when they do. If you receive a call and you’re worried they’re not who they say they are, it’s important to not share any personal details and instead say you will hang up and call them back instead.
When you hang up, simply call 159, an anti-scam and anti-fraud initiative that provides a safe route to get in touch with your bank without having to remember or look up long numbers.
What is 159?
The 159 scheme is operated by Stop Scams UK and is intended “to be used by consumers as an easy route back to safety when you get an unexpected phone call about a financial matter”. [2]
The number will be able to connect you to more than 99% of the UK’s retail banks. The number can’t be spoofed or impersonated, so it’s safe and reliable to call and make use of the service.
How can I use the 159 service?
When you call 159, you’ll be asked for the name of the bank you’d like to be connected to – this can be via voice or your keypad. You’ll then be connected automatically to your chosen bank’s customer service department.
The service operates at the national call rate so if you call from your inclusive minutes on your mobile phone, it will be included in those – the same with landlines.
