Many serving officers and police staff join the Benevolent Fund because of the many wellbeing benefits our police charity offers.

One membership benefit that offers peace of mind to colleagues is the Death in Service Grant and the regular payments to all surviving children.

• We offer a death grant of £4,000 for serving police officers or police staff.
• If you have children, we will also pay them £25 per week until their 18th birthday.

Thankfully, most members enjoy a long and healthy service and do not claim.

Unfortunately, there are times when we do lose a serving member and sadly, towards the end of last year, we received the news about a death in service.

Thankfully the member had kept their beneficiary nomination details update-to-date and we were able to pay out the £4,000 according to the member’s wishes. The Fund is also paying a weekly £25 to the member’s surviving children.

When we receive a copy of the death certificate, we will make a payment to a member’s nominated beneficiary. Their named beneficiary is recorded on our charity’s membership records and is only updated when the Ben Fund receives instructions by them to do so.

We are aware there are members who probably haven’t checked or updated their beneficiary nominations for a long time and their personal circumstances may have changed since they joined.
