Heartfelt thanks from medically retired officer

Ben Fund member, Pete McGinn has given heartfelt thanks to the Fund for the help he has recently received.

Pete served with West Midlands Police for almost 13 years before an incident in 2013 forced him to medically retire.

Whilst on duty Pete was seriously injured trying to detain a burglar. He was dragged along at speed by the offender’s vehicle which eventually collided with a wall. Pete was thrown violently from the vehicle and received multiple injuries after hitting a lamp post. His left leg, right shoulder, knee, hip, neck and pelvis were badly injured.

Four years on, Pete has to cope with complex medical conditions, including constant pain in his leg. These are a contributor to his ongoing battle with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

Last month the Benevolent Fund paid for Pete to enjoy a short break with his family. The Fund also supported him in seeking the help, he desperately needed, to deal with his PTSD.

“I wish to express my appreciation to all the staff linked with WMP Benevolent Fund.

“Not only has the Fund provided a therapeutic break, for me and my family, which has really helped with my recovery, they have also put me in touch with a professional team, specialising in PTSD, that will support me in the long term.

“Everyone at the Benevolent Fund has been really helpful and most importantly they’ve listened. I shall be eternally grateful for their support.

“Officers should strongly consider joining for such a small fee of £2 a month. It makes a massive difference to people lives when they need it”
