Family makes donation to Benevolent Fund in Dad’s memory

We are very grateful to the family of the late Arthur Alan Hughes for their recent donation of £350 to WMP Benevolent Fund

Arthur sadly passed away in December last year at the age of 90.

His daughter, Christine, takes a moment to share memories of his life and work with us.

“My father served initially in his teenage years during the early part of the Second World War as a police messenger/cadet before enlisting with the RAF.

He returned to the Force, Staffordshire County, in 1955 and served in Tipton, Wednesbury, West Bromwich, Aldridge, Lichfield and Walsall before retiring from West Midlands Police in 1981 as an inspector.

“Memories of his life and work remain an important part of all our lives. My mother, Ann Elizabeth Hughes, affectionately known as Betty, had also served during the wartime in uniform in the Women’s Auxiliary Police Corps and then continued as a civilian clerk in Tipton for many years.

“Sadly a fall last year and ensuing mobility problems robbed dad of his independence for the last 12 months. He celebrated his 90th birthday in July with us all in a care home. He began to suffer with his memory but this did not stop him taking compete charge of an accident at the nursing home recently when a carer stumbled and dislocated her knee.

“He was always on duty!

“We all agreed that the WMP Benevolent Fund continues to do excellent work in these uncertain times and is worthy of our support. We hope our donation will, in some way, reflect his commitment to others and help those who serve, or have  served, as police officers or staff and who are experiencing difficulties at this time.”
